Soybean oil is a widely used vegetable oil that is extracted from soybeans, a type of oilseed. The quality of the soybean seeds plays a crucial role in the final product’s quality, as the presence of impurities can affect the oil’s taste, color, and texture. Therefore, the production process involves various steps to ensure the raw materials are of high quality and free from impurities. In this article, we will discuss the process for soybean oil production, which involves cleaning, cracking, husking, softening, flaking, and expand/press to extract the oil, followed by pretreatment and refining to produce high-quality soybean oil suitable for human consumption.
Detailes Steps of Soybean Oil Production
1. Receiving and cleaning of soybean seeds
The raw material-soybean seeds arrive at the processing plant in bulk. They are passed through screens and sieves to remove debris, dust, stones and other foreign materials. Any broken or discolored seeds are also removed through visual inspection.
2. Adjusting moisture content
The moisture content of the seeds is adjusted to the optimum level for oil extraction, usually around 12-14%. This is done by adding moisture through spraying or steaming, or drying through blowers or mechanical dryers.
3. Cracking and conditioning
The soybean seeds are cracked or flaked to expose the inner, oil-rich parts. This pretreatment can be done through rollers, extruders or hammer mills. The cracked soybeans are usually heated to around 80-90°C through steam conditioners to soften the oil cells for better oil release.
4. Pressing or solvent extraction
The conditioned soybean flakes are either pressed in screw presses or subjected to solvent extraction to separate the oil from the meal. Pressing is usually done in 2 or 3 stages to maximize oil yield. Solvent extraction uses hexane to extract residual oil from the pressed cake.
5. Clarification and refining
The crude soybean oil undergoes physical refining processes to improve quality. This includes degumming to remove phospholipids, alkali refining to neutralize free fatty acids, bleaching to remove colour pigments and deodorization under high vacuum to remove undesirable odours.
6. Filtration and storage
The finished soybean oil is filtered through cartridge or depth filters to remove any remaining solid particles. It is then stored in sanitized tanks outfitted with continuous quality monitoring equipment until bottling or packaging.
By thoroughly optimizing each step with the proper equipment, setup and operating conditions, businesses can maximize oil yields, throughput and production of high quality soybean oil suitable for food, industrial and biodiesel applications. Low temperature desolventization technique is that the wet meal is operated under low temperature and short time,with certain vacuum condition, remove the solvent from the meal, achieve to the required index. It can reduce the protein degeneration degree in a big extent,improve the protein quality.
